Back in 2012 Yannick Read created the world's first pop-up zebra crossing after he became concerned about his son's journey to school. Parents at his son's school had asked the local council in Kingston-upon-Thames to install a safe crossing but had been turned down on the basis of cost. According to the Highways Agency, a basic zebra crossing costs an eye-watering £114,000. But Yannick was able to come up with a solution that cost less than £50 - using recycled linoleum, drain pipes and two orange balloons to create an extremely realistic crossing. And thanks to the media coverage his quirky crossing inspired the council agreed to install the real thing.
